To coincide with today's impending NPD reports for June 2011, Sony announced its own
Infamous 2, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, was the top-selling game SKU in the U.S.
While multiplatform games
L.A. Noire and
Duke Nukem Forever outsold the PlayStation 3-exclusive
Infamous 2 on NPD's all-platforms list, Sucker Punch's game outsold all other titles on a SKU-by-SKU basis on the chart that breaks down sales by each version of a game.
"According to the latest NPD report, PlayStation continues to see growth in software with a strong demand for exclusive PlayStation 3 franchise titles. The recently launched
Infamous 2 was the #1 software SKU in June," said Patrick Seybold, the senior director of corporate communications at SCEA.
The company also noted that the
Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta -- which will conclude tomorrow at 9:00 AM PDT -- surpassed over 1.5 million users this week, which Seybold says "[demonstrates] the strength of the PlayStation platform and consumers’ interest in gaming experiences that combine rich stories, challenging gameplay, and exhilarating 3D immersion."
Last month, Sony reported that PlayStation 3 hardware sales were up 14 percent year-over-year, and that the platform had experienced its fourth consecutive month of sales growth -- the company made no such comments about PlayStation 3 hardware sales this month.
