Although less reactive than internet sites can be, television
does reach many gamers who would otherwise not seek out or trawl
through news online - a recent poll identified 38% of viewers
relied heavily on television to shape their gaming purchases. Our
partnership with the Poker Channel is a great platform for the
show, not only because of its reach, but also the similarity of
interests – with half of the Poker Channel’s audience
purchasing at least 10 games per year.
The show itself is essentially a round-up of the month’s
gaming action, with publisher interviews, event reports, features,
competitions and previews thrown in for good measure; but mainly we
wanted to approach the subject in a slightly different way, by
taking gaming itself seriously, without actually being all that
serious in the show itself. Gamers are an intelligent and generally
mature bunch (although XBOX Live mods may disagree). So rather than
attempt to focus it towards a particular group - which just ends up
being a bit cringeworthy - we wanted to produce a show that we
would enjoy watching ourselves (we’re selfish that way).
We’re very lucky to have Empire magazine’s very own
Chris Hewitt at the helm to lend a touch of class and some
impeccable comic timing. Former readers of PC Zone may also spot
self-appointed industry legend Steve Hill, who is involved both on
and off screen. Hill revealed: “I’m back on the
box.”
Our aim with Gameshock TV was to make something that
wouldn’t feel exclusive or cliquey, but be a bit of fun that
anyone with an interest in gaming could enjoy. We have fun making
it, and we hope that’s what comes across most.
