Linköping, Sweden - February 26, 2015 - Donya Labs, the leading provider of automatic 3D optimization solutions for digital content creation, and PlatinumGames, creators of the Bayonetta series, The Wonderful 101, and Scalebound, today announced that Platinum Studios created the critically acclaimed hit game Bayonetta 2 using Simplygon. Simplygon was used to create high quality Level of Detail (LOD) models, meshes and scenes that reduced the size of the in-game models, while optimizing the performance of the game on Wii U. Simplygon also reduced the number of draw calls, further enhancing performance and helping PlatinumGames deliver a game that delighted fans and raised the bar for the franchise. Bayonetta 2 is a Wii U exclusive title created by PlatinumGames and published by Nintendo.

“We introduced Simplygon to Bayonetta 2 for the first time for one of our titles. Back then we were struggling with the amount of content and quality we could add into the game with a tight schedule, during the late phase of development. For this title, Simplygon mainly helped us with LOD creation for the background. A huge object that used to require one day of manual labor to reduce the vertices can be optimized, with the ideal number of polygons, in an hour after converting with Simplygon. Of course, sometimes we needed to manually modify it in detail, however, our work efficiency was vastly boosted,” said Akiko Kuroda, Producer at PlatinumGames Inc. “For example, when changes were made on the geometries after that the reduction was already done, we previously had to re-do the reduction on the original object and it took a lot of time, however with Simplygon we drastically reduced the iteration time and the labor required. For this we were able to focus more on improving the quality of the game. With the great success of using Simplygon in Bayonetta 2, we are now positively introducing Simplygon in other titles.”

Simplygon is popular amongst developers of mobile games; AAA PC and console games; and large MMOs, and is applicable to any medium where 3D art assets are created or utilized. By automatically generating lower-polygon models that are required for different levels of detail (LOD), an optimization process for making games and visual scenes run smoother, at higher frame-rates, and requiring less data, Simplygon helps digital content creators save important resources where artists would otherwise need to manually re-create large amounts of content.
