Dr. África Periáñez will discuss diversity challenges and present her experience breaking down gender barriers while pushing back the frontiers of machine learning and video games at the February 28 session “Empowering: Can We ʻHave It Allʼ Responsible AI”.

Dr. África Periáñez, CEO of Yokozuna Data, a Keywords Studio—the first data science company in the video game industry to develop a machine learning engine that predicts the behavior of individual players—will be participating in MWC19 Barcelona, to be held February 25–28, 2019. She will be part of a panel of experts who will address gender diversity challenges and needs in the AI and video game industries at the Women4Tech summit.

Women4Tech is a key initiative in the agenda of the world's largest exhibition for the mobile industry. It explores how to integrate gender equality into work environments and labor-related policies, thereby promoting equality of opportunity and treatment for men and women.

As part of this program, Dr. Periáñez will discuss the role and reality of women in AI and machine learning and her experience breaking down gender barriers while pushing back the frontiers of data science and mobile games. Participating in Thursday’s session “Empowering: Can We ‘Have It All’ Responsible AI”, Yokozuna Data’s CEO will share her input as the leader of one of the most ambitious projects in the video game industry—developed by a team where half of the engineers and all of the data scientists are women.

Video games generated nearly $135 billion in revenue last year—more than the TV and cinema industries together—, which represents a 10.9% increase over 2017. Even though the gaming industry is clearly burgeoning, it is still dominated by men, as women represent only 22% of the people working in this sector and it is still hard to find them in any leadership roles. Besides these industry figures, Yokozuna Data’s CEO will address another critical topic for gender diversity: the realities and particularities of being headquartered in Japan, a country where women account for a paltry 4% of CEOs and 1.1% of board members in any industry.

A clear milestone for the coming years should be the adoption of gender diversity policies in the AI, video game and mobile entertainment sectors, through a constructive criticism of stereotypes based on the experiences and work of the women who are currently leading different aspects of these industries.

Dr. África Periáñez will participate in the “Empowering: Can We ‘Have It All’ Responsible AI” session, scheduled for Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 9.15 AM, at the Hall 4 – Auditorium A.
