I 've seen that happen many times. There 's just no substitute for having seen all the ways in which things go wrong... Not saying things don 't find new ways to go wrong as well, of course.

I actually found REAMDE surprisingly informed about game development. At least --unlike, say, Ready Player One -- it doesn 't call every developer a programmer . Stephenson 's involvement with Clang may have something to do with it.

Seems like an apt comparison, regarding the vertical integration and tight software/hardware coupling. With a field as immature as VR, a good experience is a lot more important than standards or openness. That can and probably will happen later, if it takes off.
