Randomization in Exploding Kittens

A Game Centered Around Randomness

Exploding Kittens is a intense and silly card game based on the idea that there's a rigged bomb in the deck and no one knows when it will be drawn. Players have the tools of shuffling, taking a peek at the deck, and judging poker faces that they use to make the random placement of the bomb work in their favor.

In the game, Exploding Kittens cards have the potential to remove a player from the game if they don't have a Defuse card. Because the deck is shuffled randomly and players must draw one card every turn, players wonder every turn if they will draw the exploding kitten and aim to find out this unknown information.

What's The Player Experience?

The player experience is that players feel anxious each turn that they will get the exploding kitten and try to use special cards such as the See the Future card and Shuffle card to avoid losing. If a person uses both of these cards in a turn, they can learn where the exploding kitten is and break up the randomness by intentionally shuffling the deck to give the exploding kitten to a certain player.

Why Does It Matter?

Randomization is a major system in tons of analog and digital games. Without it, it can be difficult to keep players on their toes. Players like being surprised and game devs want to keep players playing so randomization is a useful tool.
