Saling The World: Club Penguin Tops U.S. DS Sales; Layton and Kirby Lead in Japan Exclusive

December 5, 2008 | By Danny Cowan

Gamasutra's exclusively compiled weekly real-time Amazon.com charts, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week's charts, with data taken from December 4th, 2008, find Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force taking a first-place sales victory on the Nintendo DS in North America, as Fallout 3 leads console sales in Japan.

Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded.

This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows:

Nintendo Wii
North America: 1. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (LucasArts), 2. Active Life: Outdoor Challenge (Namco Bandai), 3. We Ski (Namco Bandai), 4. Trauma Center: New Blood (Atlus), 5. Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 2 Bundle (Konami).

Japan: 1. 428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de (Sega), 2. Machi e Ikouyo: Doubutsu no Mori (Nintendo), 3. Machi e Ikouyo: Doubutsu no Mori WiiSpeak Bundle (Nintendo), 4. Wii Fit (Nintendo), 5. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo).

UK: 1. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 2. Wii Play (Nintendo), 3. Carnival: Fun Fair Games (2K Games), 4. Wii Fit (Nintendo), 5. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Sega).

Holiday-related sale prices and promotional discounts place Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Active Life: Outdoor Challenge at the top of this week's Wii sales chart at Amazon in North America. We Ski and Trauma Center: New Blood also see a sales boost after recent drops in price, while longtime chart favorites Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit finish outside of the top five.

Sega's anticipated adventure title 428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de comes out on top in its first week of release in Japan, meanwhile, as Machi e Ikouyo: Doubutsu no Mori drops to second place.

Xbox 360
North America: 1. Call of Duty: World at War (Activision), 2. Gears of War 2 (Microsoft), 3. Fallout 3 (Bethesda), 4. Halo 3 (Microsoft), 5. Fable II (Microsoft).

Call of Duty: World at War and Gears of War 2 head Xbox 360 software sales in North America for the fourth week running, as Valve's survival-horror shooter Left 4 Dead drops out of the top five. Fallout 3 maintains strong sales, while Fable II returns to the chart at fifth place.

Fallout 3 also sees a big week in Japan, where it finishes as the region's best-selling title across all platforms in its first week of release. Saints Row 2 and Agarest Senki: Reappearance make impressive debuts as well, as The Last Remnant and Tales of Vesperia round out the regional top five.

PlayStation 3
North America: 1. LittleBigPlanet (SCEA), 2. Call of Duty: World at War (Activision), 3. Prince of Persia (Ubisoft), 4. Guitar Hero World Tour: Guitar Kit (Activision), 5. Fallout 3 (Bethesda).

LittleBigPlanet rises up to surpass Call of Duty: World at War in this week's North American PS3 sales numbers. Call of Duty also finds new competition in Prince of Persia, which places third in regional sales in its debut week. Other recent hits like Resistance 2 and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe finish outside of the week's top five, though Fallout 3 remains in the running at fifth place.

Konami's World Soccer Winning Eleven 2009 tops PS3 sales in Japan, meanwhile, as Resistance 2 debuts to take first place in the UK.

Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories makes a resounding sales impact in its first week of North American release, finishing just behind Rock Band Special Edition as this week's second-best selling PS2 title. A discounted Guitar Hero World Tour peripheral bundle also makes an impression in this week's charts, as Lego Batman and Madden NFL 09 remain top picks for the upcoming holidays.

Elsewhere, Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World takes the top spot in its first week of Japanese release, while SingStar: ABBA remains in high demand in Europe.

PC
North America: 1. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Blizzard), 2. Spore (EA Games), 3. Fallout 3 (Bethesda), 4. Call of Duty: World at War (Activision), 5. Left 4 Dead (EA Games).

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King remains the PC platform's top seller in North America, with Spore coming up a close second. Left 4 Dead comes out on top in Japan, while Europe finds a new sales leader in Football Manager 2009.

Nintendo takes over every spot in the Japanese Nintendo DS charts, meanwhile, with Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe and Layton Kyouju to Saigo no Jikan Ryokou coming out on top. Wagamama Fashion: Girls Mode moves up a spot in this week's results, while Pocket Monsters Platinum returns to the top five following a brief absence.

Nihon Falcom's recently released Eiyuu Densetsu: Sora no Kiseki Set takes top honors in Japan, meanwhile, heading a lineup that also includes recent hits like Gundam vs. Gundam and Patapon 2: Don Chaka.
