The weekly Japanese sales charts have shown the first signs of life since the New Year, with a number of new entries - including a new number one.
Although overall sales are still expectedly low at this time of year, the New Play Control! (Wii de Asobu in Japan) version of Mario Power Tennis
has debuted at number one, with 57,000 unit sales.
A reworking of Camelot’s 2004 GameCube title, the new version of the game features motion sensing controls similar to Wii Sports
. Sold for at least ¥1,000 ($11) less than other Wii titles, the game is the best performing title in the range so far, although both Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat
managed to get into the top 20 at busier times of the year.
Also new at number two is a new spin-off from Atlus’ Megami Tensei
series, with strategy role-playing game Devil Survivor
on the Nintendo DS only a few thousand units behind Mario Power Tennis
, at 55,000.
Already released in the West (as Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm
), PlayStation 3 exclusive fighting game Naruto: Narutimate Storm
from Namco Bandai charted at number three, with 44,000 units sold.
One of two new Western new entries this week is the PlayStation 3 version of Fallout 3
at number seven. The Xbox 360 version was released in December and also managed to make it into the top 10, with 31,000 units sold in its debut. At this quieter time of year, the PlayStation 3 sold only 24,000 units in its first week.
The final new entry in the top 10, at number 10, is DS Uranai Seikatsu
from Nintendo. The latest release for the Touch! Generations label, the title involves fortune-telling and tarot card reading.
The only other new entry in the rest of the top 30 is Codemasters’ Race Driver: GRID
on PlayStation 3 at number 26. The game is the first to be self-published in Japan by Codemasters
and features fully localized speech and text, as well as other Japanese specific content.
