ESA awards $90K in game dev scholarships to promote diversity

ESA awards $90K in game dev scholarships to promote diversity

October 23, 2014 | By Alex Wawro

This week $90,000 in scholarships was awarded to 30 students pursuing degrees related to game development by the charitable arm of the Entertainment Software Association.

The recipients are all women and minorities enrolled at accredited four-year U.S. academic institutions like Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University and the DigiPen Institute of Technology.

Each will receive $3,000 through the scholarship program, which was established by the ESA Foundation in 2008 to promote greater diversity in game development.

In the years since the call for greater diversity in games has only grown louder, with prominent developers like Brenda Romero and Laralyn McWilliams sharing their experiences and calling for change in the industry via social media, industry events and presentations like the #1ReasonToBe GDC panels.
