With his new studio 22Cans, Populus and Fable developer and former Microsoft studio GM Peter Molyneux has learned the difficulties of crowdfunding and Early Access -- lessons reverberating throughout the industry.

Molyneux's latest title, Godus was both successfully funded on Kickstarter prior to development, and launched as an Early Access title on Steam.

Some would say these lessons are his just deserts, given Molyneux's history of overpromising and big talk; however, many developers who now crowdfund or launch games on Early Access have also experienced these lessons, which has also shaped changes to the policies of both Steam and Kickstarter.

"There's this overwhelming urge to overpromise because it's such a harsh rule: if you're one penny short of your target then you don't get it. And of course in this instance, the behaviour is incredibly destructive, which is 'Christ, we've only got 10 days to go and we've got to make 100,000, for fuck's sake, lets just say anything'. So I'm not sure I would do that again," Molyneux said.
