During a press event held in San Francisco, Microsoft announced that their Mixed Reality platform will now be open to SteamVR developers. This means that developers have access to the preview program, which is intended to help them test their games.

This new partnership means that Windows users will be able to download and play the same VR titles from Steam that are available on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Microsoft Mixed Reality headsets and motion controllers are slated to be available this holiday from HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Acer with headset and motion controller bundles that start as low as $399. This is part of their mission statement to ensure that their platform has easy setup, affordable gear, and a range of hardware choices.

In regard to the partnership, Valve programmer Joe Ludwig said that “the introduction of Windows Mixed Reality headsets is also a big step forward for VR. Working with Microsoft to include SteamVR compatibility with these devices is also a big step in growing VR as an open platform for developers and consumers.”
