Former Boom Blox Devs Form Magic Pixel Games

June 2, 2011 | By Kyle Orland

A group of game development veterans from companies including THQ, EA and Activision has formed Magic Pixel Games, a cooperative where "traditional job descriptions do not always apply" and "people contribute as time and skills permit," according to the web site.

The core of the Los Angeles-based Magic Pixel team, which was first formed in 2010 and unveiled today, is made up of developers who worked on EA's Boom Blox series, including lead engineer Jeff Dixon and senior development director Mark Tsai.

The company is aiming to "build on their core expertise in motion-controlled gaming," to launch a motion-based game for the holiday season, one that's an "innovative, family-friendly experience with a signature blend of wonderment and humor," according to an announcement.

"This company was formed because the team has developed a unique chemistry and talent for building engaging gameplay, capitalizing on the strength of any given game platform - motion control or otherwise," said Magic Pixel president Mark Tsai in a statement.

Magic Pixel is currently hiring for programmers and artists ready to engage in rapid prototyping in a "collaborative, nurturing environment," according to the company web site.
