Donya Labs Brings 3D Optimization To Epic's UE3 Integrated Partners Program

June 30, 2011 | By Kyle Orland

3D optimization company Donya Labs has become the latest member of Unreal Engine 3's Integrated Partners Program, merging its Simplygon middleware features in with the popular engine.

Unreal Engine 3 licensees and users of the Unreal Development Kit June beta are now able to use Simplygon's mesh reduction features to simplify their 3D models, with further features of the middleware coming to the engine "during coming months," according to an announcement.

Simplygon lets developers automatically generate 3D models at lower levels of detail, for use when a high-quality model used in close-up situations isn't needed.

"Simplygon saves developers hundreds to thousands of hours of manual art adjustment, so we are pleased to extend those benefits to our licensees with its incorporation into Unreal Engine 3," Epic Games president Michael Capps said in a statement.

"Simplygon is especially useful for converting high-end PC assets for deployment on mobile devices, which dovetails with Unreal Engine 3ís cross-platform strengths," he continued.

Donya Labs joins an extensive list of middleware makers that have integrated their technology into Epic's premier engine, including Nvidia, Intel, Autodesk, SpeedTree, GameSpy and NaturalMotion.
