Amazon is planning to leverage its recently launched Android Appstore
into a full-fledged, Kindle-branded LCD tablet capable of surfing the web, running apps and playing games, according to media reports.
Though rumors of an Amazon tablet have persisted since the e-ink-based Kindle book reader was first launched, a TechCrunch reporter has claimed hands-on time
with a test version of the device, which reportedly sports a 7-inch multitouch screen and runs a customized version of Android 2.2 with a redesigned visual interface.
The tablet reportedly eschews Google's Android Marketplace in favor of Amazon's own curated Android Appstore, which launched in May
with a selection of over 900 games. The store now lists over 3,000 games, including over 1,400 free titles, and also boasts timed exclusive distribution for Popcap's Android game catalog
Amazon's Appstore has also drawn controversy, though, with the IGDA registering complaints
The $250 device will be released by the end of November, according to the TechCrunch report, and a potential version with a 10-inch screen and more powerful processor could follow early next year.
The report also suggests Amazon is planning on promoting the device with free subscriptions to Amazon Prime, which provides free shipping on Amazon products and access to Amazon's streaming video service.
