Officials from Take-Two Interactive publishing label 2K Games have officially announced that the company has acquired the rights to The Darkness video game being developed by Starbreeze Studios, previously to have been published by struggling firm Majesco.

During its recent exit from high-budget game publishing due to major financial issues, Majesco sold all of its rights and obligations for video games based on comic book and film licenses The Darkness and Ghost Rider, commenting at the time that both had been sold to the same publisher. 2K Games have only announced their acquisition of The Darkness, but if Majesco’s previous comments are correct, they have presumably acquired Ghost Rider at the same time.

The Darkness game has been under development for some time by Starbreeze, the developers of the award winning The Chronicles of Riddick. It is based on the comic book series from Top Cow Productions and utilizes a Starbreeze internally-developed next-generation game engine. It is planned for release on next generation consoles only this winter.

A feature film based on the property is being produced by Platinum Studios and Dimension Films and is planned for release in 2007, although the video game is based purely on the original comic book.

Sudeki and MotoGP developer Climax were previously working on Ghost Rider for Majesco, but since 2K Games have yet to announced the acquisition of the title, no new details are available. As opposed to The Darkness, the Marvel property is primarily based on the movie starring Nicholas Cage, due to be released this summer, rather than the comic book of the same name.
