When you love games as much as the Cat Duo team does, your hero-worship starts looking a little different. Our free time is best spent painting Warhammer 40K armies and deck-tuning MTG (Magic: The Gathering), so you can imagine how little room we have for Kim Cardassian and the like.

Instead, we feed our fanboi cravings by playtesting games with James Ernest to help refine his newest work-in-progress. Our heroes look more like him and creative duo Kaja and Phil Foglio, three-time Hugo Award winners for Best Graphic Story for Girl Genius. Together, they’ve brought their webcomic to print through pure fan delight and with much Kickstarter success.

You would think that when James Ernest agreed to work with us to create a digital version of one of his games, we would have been star-struck enough. But when we started to build chef avatars into our game we thought: wouldn’t it be cool if you could play as Patrick Rothfuss? We knew that Rothfuss was a huge board game geek and that he had worked with James Ernest in the past. And at the merest mention of getting celebrities on-board, James got us in touch with some of our favorite personalities in geek culture.

“I’ve enjoyed working with Kaja Foglio, because our email exchange has been delightfully full of stuffed pigs.” Cat Duo’s Art Director, Stephanie Lee continues after a pause, “She never has anything boaring to say.”

Stephanie has taken the lead in coordinating art assets between our celebrities and portrait artist Ann Green. She describes the experience as incredibly fun and rewarding.

Each celebrity has made special requests to spice things up in their chef portrait. Patrick Rothfuss, for example, requested goggles and a white jacket in an homage to Dr. Horrible. John Kovalic, designer of Munchkin, will appear with a chicken on top of his head. And art nouveau illustrator Echo Chernik will appear wearing a corset and sporting a rolling-pin… oh myyy.

Celebrity Chefs will only be made available in the Kickstarter backer version of the game. For more information, check us out on Kickstarter before September 5th. (Now at ~75% of our funding goal):

Here are the other celebrity chefs announced to appear in the game (so far):
