Hong Kong, December 2, 2019 - Area28, a software company building the world’s first cloud-based collaboration platform and game engine to empower game development teams to connect and create in real-time, today announced the close of a $2.15 million seed funding round.

The round was led by Vectr Ventures and Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, with participation from APES Ventures, Bright Success Capital and Ironfire Ventures. The new funds will scale key teams in Hong Kong and China, as well as support the final stages of product development before commercial launch.

“We are enabling teams to work together closer and faster by removing decades of legacy workflow inefficiencies from the development pipeline,'' said Tony Zander, CEO of Area28. “We allow teams to deliver their products with increased access to a distributed global workforce through a continuous integration development platform. We believe that making games should be as frictionless and as fun as playing games.”

Established in 2017, Area28 has been pushing the boundaries of how effectively and efficiently game development teams can work together. In addition to building a high-performance game engine, Area28 is developing an engine agnostic cloud collaboration layer that will allow developers to maintain current workflows while accessing the Area28 cloud. By building an infrastructure that will allow developers from anywhere in the world to develop projects together simultaneously in real-time, Area28 is radically improving workflows and software performance in creating interactive content.

Cindy Chow, Executive Director of Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, said, “With China being one of the world’s biggest markets for games, we are looking forward to helping Area28 service this market through collaboration leveraging the Alibaba ecosystem. We believe Area28’s technology will add significant value to the game development process and we are excited to help them grow and scale faster.”

As cloud computing continues to evolve industries and operating models, game development must also progress from an analog to a cloud-based approach to enable on-site collaboration, eliminate inefficient workflows, and support real-time monitoring.
