GDC 2000 Video:
Yu Suzuki's Keynote Address
Available for the first time to the public thanks to newly discovered
conference source tapes, we present Yu Suzuki's keynote from the
2000 Game Developers Conference.
Yu
Suzuki, legendary leader of Sega's AM2 arcade team and project leader
for Shenmue, discusses "reality" as a key component
in the ultimate fantasy of video games. The epic game in particular,
like the epic novel, lends itself to the highest level of imaginary
wandering. However, a complex world only becomes immersive and meaningful
when it reflects real-life behavior and values. Suzuki talks about
creating a "game that is what the player makes it", and
how to sustain that vision throughout development.
