Saling The World: Orange Box, FIFA Head Cross-Platform U.S. Sales

Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week's charts, with data taken from October 11th, 2007, feature big debut sales numbers for The Orange Box and FIFA Soccer 08, while Project Gotham Racing 4 cleans up in Japan and the UK. Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded.

This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows:

Nintendo Wii
North America: 1. Carnival Games (Global Star), 2. Wii Play (Nintendo), 3. Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party (Konami), 4. Mario Party 8 (Nintendo), 5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo).

Japan: 1. Dragon Quest Swords: Kamen no Joou to Kagami no Tou (Square Enix), 2. Wii Sports (Nintendo), 3. Mario Party 8 (Nintendo), 4. Dragon Ball Z Sparking! Meteor (Bandai), 5. Mario Strikers Charged (Nintendo).

UK: 1. Big Brain Academy for Wii (Nintendo), 2. Wii Play (Nintendo), 3. FIFA 08 (EA Games), 4. Super Paper Mario (Nintendo), 5. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 (EA Sports).

Carnival Games once again tops Nintendo Wii sales for the third week running, as this week's U.S. chart remains largely unchanged from last week's results. Metroid Prime 3 has since dropped out of the top five -- a return remains likely, however. Super Smash Bros. Brawl tops Wii preorder sales, meanwhile, though this may change in future weeks, thanks to a recent announcement that the title's release has been delayed until February.

Xbox 360
North America: 1. Halo 3 (Microsoft), 2. The Orange Box (EA Games), 3. FIFA Soccer 08 (EA Sports), 4. Halo 3: Limited Edition (Microsoft), 5. BioShock (2K Games).

Japan: 1. Project Gotham Racing 4 (Microsoft), 2. Halo 3 (Microsoft), 3. Project Darkness (Success), 4. Halo 3: Limited Edition (Microsoft), 5. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Spike).

UK: 1. Halo 3 (Microsoft), 2. Project Gotham Racing 4 (Microsoft), 3. FIFA 08 (EA Sports), 4. BioShock (2K Games), 5. Gears of War (Microsoft).

The Xbox 360 version of The Orange Box nearly tops Halo 3's weekly sales in its first few days on store shelves, and makes a strong impression as the week's second-best selling title across all platforms in the United States. FIFA Soccer 08 is also off to a fast U.S. sales start, and continues to rank high in sales in Europe as well. In Japan, Project Gotham Racing 4 comes out on top in its debut week, while the Japanese-exclusive strategy title Project Darkness nearly eclipses Halo 3 in the week's sales numbers.

PlayStation 3
North America: 1. FIFA Soccer 08 (EA Sports), 2. Folklore (SCEA), 3. Heavenly Sword (SCEA), 4. Resistance: Fall of Man (SCEA), 5. Ninja Gaiden Sigma (Tecmo).

Japan: 1. Rise from Lair (SCEI), 2. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Spike), 3. The Godfather: The Don's Edition (EA Games), 4. Minna no Golf 5 (SCEI), 5. Agarest Senki (Compile Heart).

UK: 1. Resistance: Fall of Man (SCEE), 2. FIFA 08 (EA Sports), 3. MotorStorm (SCEE), 4. Formula One Championship Edition (SCEE), 5. Heavenly Sword (SCEE).

FIFA Soccer 08 and Folklore finish at the top of the PS3's sales chart in their first week at U.S. retail. Amazon reports that the PlayStation 3 port of FIFA 08 is currently the most popular port of the game in the United States, with the Xbox 360 version finishing at a close second. Demand for NBA 2K8 and NBA Live 08 falls sharply, meanwhile, despite both titles' impressive chart debut last week.

PlayStation 2
North America: 1. FIFA Soccer 08 (EA Sports), 2. Guitar Hero II Bundle (Activision), 3. Madden NFL 08 (EA Sports), 3. God of War II (SCEA), 4. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s (Activision), 5. NBA Live 08 (EA Sports).

Japan: 1. Arcana Heart (AQ Interactive), 2. Arabians Lost: The Engagement on Desert (Prototype), 3. Dragon Ball Z Sparking! Meteor (Bandai), 4. Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid Collection (Konami), 5. Idol Janshi Suchie-Pai 4 (Jaleco).

UK: 1. FIFA 08 (EA Sports), 2. SingStar Rock Ballads (SCEE), 3. Rugby 08 (EA Sports), 4. EyeToy Play 3 with Camera (SCEE), 5. Crash of the Titans (Sierra UK).

FIFA Soccer 08 finds a receptive PS2 audience in both the United States and Europe, and finishes in first place in both regions this week. Japanese gamers, on the other hand, give a warm welcome to Arcana Heart and Arabians Lost: The Engagement on Desert, which take the top two sales slots in their first week of release. The just-released Idol Janshi Suchie-Pai 4 is also one of the region's biggest hits for the week, continuing in the tradition of one of publisher Jaleco's most successful franchises.

PC
North America: 1. The Orange Box (EA Games), 2. Nancy Drew: Legend of Crystal Skull (Her Interactive), 3. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer (Atari), 4. The Sims 2: Bon Voyage (EA Games), 5. World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (Blizzard).

Japan: 1. Hatsune Miku (Cripton Future Media), 2. Phantasy Star Universe: Illuminus no Yabou (Sega), 3. The Sims 2: Travelers! Data Set (EA Games), 4. Little Busters! (KEY), 5. Nobunaga no Yabou Kakushin with Power Up Kit (Koei).

UK: 1. The Settlers: Rise of an Empire (Ubisoft), 2. Rail Simulator (EA Games), 3. World in Conflict (Sierra UK), 4. The Sims 2: Bon Voyage (EA Games), 5. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Activision).

The PC port of The Orange Box barely nudges out the latest release in the Amazon shopper favorite Nancy Drew series in both titles' debut week. Future weeks could bring different results, however, given the strong and lasting popularity each new Nancy Drew release has previously seen at Amazon.

Nintendo DS
North America: 1. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo), 2. Brain Age 2 (Nintendo), 3. Brain Age (Nintendo), 4. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo), 5. Drawn to Life (THQ).

Japan: 1. DS Nishimura Kyotaro Suspense Shin Tantei Series: Kyoto Atami Zekkai no Kotou - Satsui no Wana (Tecmo), 2. Tashiten: Tashite 10 ni Suru Monogatari (Nintendo), 3. Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training: Motto Eigo Duke (Nintendo), 4. TOEIC Test DS Training (IE Institute), 5. Facening de Hyoujou Yutaka ni Inshou Up: Otona no DS Kao Training (Nintendo).

UK: 1. Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training (Nintendo), 2. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo), 3. More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima (Nintendo), 4. Cooking Mama (505 Games), 5. MySims (EA Games).

Though it debuted several weeks ago, positive buzz and word-of-mouth has just now caught up to THQ's Drawn to Life, which places in the DS top five for the first time since its release. Whether this buzz will result in continued sales success is unknown, but the Nintendo DS has previously seen similar stories in titles like Puzzle Quest. In Japan, last week's sales champion Ash: Archaic Sealed Heat falls out of the top five completely in favor of newcomers DS Nishimura Kyotaro Suspense Shin Tantei Series: Kyoto Atami Zekkai no Kotou - Satsui no Wana and Tashiten: Tashite 10 ni Suru Monogatari.

PlayStation Portable
North America: 1. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (Square Enix), 2. Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron (LucasArts), 3. Jeanne D'Arc (SCEA), 4. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (Rockstar), 5. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2 (SCEA).

Japan: 1. Gundam Battle Chronicle (Bandai), 2. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix), 3. Eiyuu Densetsu: Sora no Kiseki FC (Nihon Falcom), 4. Eiyuu Densetsu: Sora no Kiseki SC (Nihon Falcom), 5. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus (Konami).

UK: 1. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (Square Enix), 2. FIFA 08 (EA Sports), 3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (Rockstar), 4. Sega Mega Drive Collection (Sega), 5. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (Capcom).

Gundam Battle Chronicle takes over as the PSP's sales leader this week in Japan, pushing longtime chart topper Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII to second place for the first time since its release nearly a month ago. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions debuts to a first-place finish in the United States this week, matching its previous and continuing performance in Europe. The just-released Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron also sees big initial sales numbers, and could remain in the top five for quite some time, given that Star Wars Battlefront II still makes regular appearances.
