ref article: Question of the Week: Does Size Matter?
It seems to be a common refrain of current devs to say size or length of play is not an important consideration in this modern era of game development.

Sadly, it's exactly this attitude that has been turning me away from many game purchases. I think many devs are forgetting a most important part of what they are doing.

That is they are not making games just for themselves, and just because they don't have the time or desire to play through an epic doesn't mean their potential audience won't.

What's wrong with saving your game anyway? That technology has been around from the beginning?

I think the main reason for games getting shorter is due to the primary quest for graphical excellence. It takes a lot of effort and time to create all these next-gen graphics, and that has a price.

Think about the great all time classic games:

Civ, Elite, X-com etc - all games that you can still play today, even if you had tried them when they first came out. All epic games offering huge amounts of play time and replayability.

Personally i think it's also down to the accountants, and the whole 'business' priority the industry now operates on.

Its why my game buying has steadily been dropping for years now(and why i'm having to make my own!), it's very difficult to find games that offer the kind of 'breadth' of game content/longevity that gaming seemed to be offering a decade ago.
