| 03.14.2007Soapbox: Why You Owe the Columbine RPG I'm sorry, but the Soapbox article by Patrick Dugan on the columbine RPG is the biggest piece of rubbish I've ever read on Gamasutra (a site I've been reading for over 7 years now).
I believe in protecting the First Amendment at all costs, but to insinuate that this is a work of art that should be celebrated as the height of our medium to be discussed is a farce. It is also grossly insulting to the hundreds of incredible independent games over the years that did far better to challenge media perceptions but were not shocking enough to illicit attention.
Danny Ledonne is an opportunist and is using his new found notoriety to bring fame to himself. If we allow this to happen, we allow the media to brand us exactly as we are already perceived; as a bunch of immature psychopaths with nothing important to say. All this does is embolden the lawmakers to push forth harsher laws, and this helps NO ONE.
If this is what represents fine art in game design I'm sure the author can't wait for "Super Gas Chamber Tycoon 1943". How far does it need to go until people like the author realize this is not just a game made in poor taste which must be protected by first amendment rights, but instead something that hurts society and its people as a whole?-Aurelio Reis |
