PlayStation 3 To Add DivX Support

Video codec firm DivX has announced that its video technology will be integrated into PlayStation 3, adding support for DivX video playback to the console.

DivX says it is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver its technology to consumers "in the near future." According to the company, current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date.

Additionally, PS3 game developers will be able to utilize DivX’s decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3’s Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which Sony released on November 2nd.

The announcement comes just after reports that DivX was in discussions with Microsoft to add support for its codec to the Xbox 360, although DivX CEO Kevin Hell did not confirm anything at the time.

Commented Hell on the agreement with Sony, "We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3. Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.”
