Simutronics announced today that ZeniMax Online Studios has licensed the Simutronics HeroEngine, the company's MMO development platform, for an unannounced project currently beginning development.

Simutronics first launched HeroEngine as a licensed development platform in 2006 after five years of development. It incorporates rapid-prototyping and world-building tools with a content pipeline aimed specifically at the needs of MMO development teams.

Earlier this year, Simutronics announced three new licensees: Virgin Games UK, Stray Bullet Games and Colony Studios, along with BioWare. Virgin utilized HeroEngine in the development of A World Of My Own, its virtual island game portal.

ZeniMax Online Studios was recently founded by Bethesda Softworks parent ZeniMax media, and headed by Mythic Entertainment (now owned by EA) founder Matt Firor.

Said Firor, “ZeniMax Online selected HeroEngine because we determined it will serve our needs best. That fact that we can get up and running with meaningful art and content in the near term makes the HeroEngine a perfect fit for us."
