Electronic Arts' Casual Entertainment label has announced it is developing a new wholly-owned original IP called Zubo, a music-based rhythm-action game for Nintendo DS and slated for worldwide release later this year.

Zubo sets players in the world of Zubalon, where they're tasked with rescuing the world from an evil force. Along the way, players befriend Zubos, feed them and nurture their skills, and help them with their battles against the enemy.

EA says music is the game's key element, and that players will use stylus action synchronized with the musical beats to win in battle. Players assemble squads from 55 available Zubos, with the title also featuring exploration and minigame elements.

The title is in development by EA's Guildford, UK studio, now given the official studio name Bright Light, who formerly have worked on the publisher's Harry Potter franchise.

Bright Light studio head Harvey Elliot commented, "Zubo represents the culmination of a dedicated incubation project, which specifically sought to develop a new videogame property for boys and girls under 12. The team here has designed a rich, immersive and, above all, enjoyable experience -- one that will live in the schoolyard, at home or on the move."
