The Divnich Tapes: Lack Of First-Party IPs To Blame For Slow PS3 Sales

[Throughout this week, EEDAR's director of analytical services Jesse Divnich is presenting exclusive Gamasutra analysis of April's hardware and software trends, using data from Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR), The simExchange, NPD, IGN GamerMetrics, and GameTrailers.

Today's chart analysis examines 3-month unit sales for games featuring branded titles, characters, and universes, separated by publisher. He argues that Sony's lack of successful first-party brand releases for the PlayStation 3 may have contributed to the console's slow start.

Previously: sluggish GTA IV hardware sales pointing to likely PS3 and Xbox 360 price cuts, the unsure future of hardware-driving titles, and new IPs finding less success on the Wii.]


It is no revelation that Nintendo leads the pack in terms of the popularity of branded intellectual properties, but the difference among its competitors is overwhelming, and we should take notice of Nintendo's success.



It is not just the Mario brand that is driving these sales, but others such as Wario, Fire Emblem, Donkey Kong, Pokémon, and Zelda.

This has always been the key to Nintendo’s success - any time the company adds a new character, title, or universe to its games, it creates a branding opportunity that could eventually sport a successful standalone spin-off.

Other interesting data points come from Sega and Sony, as their brands have struggled to succeed in this next-generation cycle. While Sega’s brands themselves have dwindled in popularity over the years, Sony’s struggle comes from the lack of successful brand releases in the first place.

In previous generations, Sony had some of the strongest character brands in the industry, with first or second-party franchises including Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, God of War, and Syphon Filter.

Unfortunately, only one of those, Ratchet & Clank, has made a next-generation appearance. This likely played a significant role in the PS3’s slow start as the company chose to rest more on second or third-party titles and relatively new brands (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Lair, Folklore, Resistance).

There is a silver lining in this cloud; we can expect Sony to release games based on its successful brands within the next few years. This should make Sony’s software library more appealing to potential next-generation consumers.

PS3 sales and 360 sales are slow because of the price barrier. Granted the 360 is/was doing OK in comparison to the PS3 but the Wii is kicking its butt, and the PS2 was beating it, for a reason. The cost of entry into these Hi-Def machines is just too much for Joe Public.

Look at all of these next-gen games and find the gameplay differences. There isn't much right now. In fact, the biggest differences across the board are better online support and better graphics. If you don't have the money necessary to get an HDTV, a $400+ game console, a $100+ router, and possibly a $50+/month broadband connection to the Internet then no amount of 1st party titles is going to matter.

Tons of my friends are in this boat. They want to play the games but right now there's just too much stuff to buy in order to play it. So, in conclusion Sony made a SMART decision by going with mostly new Franchises because the hardcore, early-adoption crowd were more interested in seeing the power of the machines than the brands and they aren't leaving behind too many of the fanbase. When they finally roll out their better known franchises, the ones that can sell themselves, it will most likely be based on the fact that the market of people who have broadband and an HDTV are larger.

Great analysis! Right on the money IMO. Sony had always expected a slow start for their console so they could hit profitability sooner, they just didnt expect the Wii and 360 to get such a strong start.

Dood, to make your own IP you need money, an idea and lots and lots of connections AND one rocking Prototype.

Perhaps Sony should put their money where their mouth is and start dishing out some cash to developers to create prototypes? Hmm?

I agree with this article. Brand appeal is a force to be reconned with. Someone who might not consider the PS3 because of its cost might buy it if a game from a favorite brand were launching on it.
