PlayStation Store Updates With Free MGS4 Database, Pain Content

Sony has updated its PlayStation Store with two free downloads, one of which is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Database, an official knowledge base for all things Metal Gear Solid.

The interactive database application is meant to be a resource for both newly introduced players and veterans of the series, featuring complete storylines, character profiles, relationship diagrams, and other details on series lore. It also includes a "spoilers" feature which blacks out Metal Gear Solid 4 plot details until the user has completed the game.

In addition, the Metal Gear Solid 4 game has been updated with free downloadable content, such as new camouflage and a music track for the in-game iPod. Konami Online's Brandon Laurino added that the studio will continue to support Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Online with new downloadable content "well through this year."

The other free download appearing on the PlayStation Store today is an update for downloadable game Pain. The update includes new features such as a multiple character character selection, logo skip, and jukebox play, the last of which allows players to listen to their own music in the game.

New Pain content is also available in the form of downtown layouts. The two new downtown configurations, Demolition and Block Party, are accessible through Pain's trophy room after downloading the update.

Pain senior producer Travis Williams also promises another update for next week, which will include a playable character named Nigel and a Platinum Club containing an exclusive leader board and new game layouts for players who have earned all of the Pain's platinum medals.

Said Williams: "This will be a two-week process where each week we release new features and content to Pain. This is a two-week process because we are perfecting our content delivery process. We have always had this goal with Pain that we should be able to move faster with our content delivery than most games... [Pain blog readers] have been waiting for months for us to pick up the pace. Some of them were wondering where I’ve been lately."

He continued: "While we are not completely done with this exercise I believe we have come a long way in making sure that the Pain content delivery process is ironed out. In the coming months you will see new modes, characters, environments, and content options that everyone has been asking (or demanding) since we released in November (in the US). The great part about all of our future work is that it is worldwide."
