E3: Ubisoft Reveals I Am Alive , New Casual Line

Ubisoft's E3 press conference revealed a new 'survival adventure' title, I Am Alive, from French studio Darkworks, as well as new ranges of casual games, from Monkeyz through the Ener-G girl-targeted DS game series.

Here are the key announcements thus far from the press event, being held at the Los Angeles Convention Center:

- Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America, demonstrated Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party, the latest entry in the popular Rabbids franchise, with an emphasis on support for the recently launched Wii Balance Board. The game will launch in November for Wii and DS.

- A brief trailer for I Am Alive, a survival-adventure game from French studio Darkworks that will launch for the current generation of consoles next spring, was shown - but little else information was released on the game, which is set in Chicago after some kind of natural disaster.

- The company will release the latest in Gearbox's Brothers in Arms series, Hell's Highway, in September for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3.

- Ubisoft will expand its casual lines to the Wii by years end. The Imagine series of games will debut on the Wii later in 2008 with Fashion Party and Party Babyz, joined by Monkeyz and Petz Sportz.

-The company also announced a line of sports games for DS targeted towards girls called Ener-G, first three titles - Adventure Riders, Dance Squad and Gym Rockets - will launch in the fall.

Gamasutra will have more in-person commentary and analysis of the announcements from our correspondents in Los Angeles in the near future.

I look at that picture and that title and the first thing that comes to mind is: I Am Legend

Coincidence?

These sort of blind stabs at the casual market remind me of what Disney did in the last few years until they made Miley Cyrus.. and the end results will likely be equally soul-less.

Casual may necessitate a lessening of depth, but this does not have to detract from the perceived value. It is important to avoid hardcore snobbery when evaluating content for casual consumption.
