Raptr Raises $12M, Launches Gaming Social Network Public Beta
Advertisement
Gaming social network Raptr, which lets users share game stats, achievements and other data about their playing habits with friends, launched an open beta today, along with an alpha version of its Mac client software.

The free service, which has been in private beta since February 2008 with 1,000 users, works with thousands of games across multiple platforms including PC, Mac, Xbox 360, Facebook, Flash, Wii, and PlayStation 3.

Users can track their own gameplay and that of their friends in realtime, display and share gaming identities and achievements, and exchange tastes and other activities via social networking services such as Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed.

Based in Sunnyvale, California, Raptr was founded in 2007 by Xfire co-founder Dennis Fong. The company also revealed that it raised $12 million in funding from Accel Partners and the Founders Fund.

Raptr also announced that it appointed Rannah Edelin as its vice president of marketing and business development. Previously, Rannah served as vice president at The Sims Internet Group, one of Electronic Arts' four major divisions. Also joining Raptr is former eBay senior director Dave Swenson as VP of engineering.

Isn't this service similar to XFire? I thought I had read somewhere that XFire was going to start allowing console game updates as well, so that puts raptr in direct competition with XFire. While I enjoy innovation and competition, I think XFire just has too much traction with the gaming genre today to unseat it.
