Microsoft says Ensemble Studios' Halo Wars has sold more than one million units worldwide since its launch late in February -- according to the company, this makes it the best-selling real-time strategy game on current generation consoles.

Halo Wars is set in the Halo franchise's universe in the year 2525, and puts players in command of early battles between the UNSC and Covenant 20 years prior to the events of Halo.

Microsoft says that to date more than 2.6 million Halo Wars multiplayer matches have been played -- more than 118 years collectively of players' time.

Since Ensemble Studios' closure, vets of the studio have formed three separate new studios. Among them is Robot Entertainment, with which Microsoft says it's "working closely" on more Halo Wars content.
