Electronic Arts Enters Combat Sports With EA Sports MMA

At its E3 media briefing, Electronic Arts announced it's joining the combat sports arena with EA Sports MMA, a mixed martial arts competitive fighting game.

It'll launch in 2010 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and promises a "vast array of top fighters and fighting styles from around the world."

EA Sports head Peter Moore says the title's part of its "combat sports strategy" along with Fight Night Round 4. "Fans have been begging EA sports to get into the cage," says Moore.

The combat sports category has proven to be solidly lucrative for publisher THQ, whose UFC 2009: Undisputed made a chart-topping debut on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 when it released May 19. Analysts expect Undisputed could sell about 1 million units in its first year.

EA Tiburon is developing the title, and Moore says the team is focused on "capturing the raw intensity that has made mixed martial arts one of the fastest growing sports in the world."

"We’re ready for the fight," he adds.

I'm guessing this will mirror the current situation of MMA promotions - the only guy worth strong mention in that game will be Fedor.
