THQ To Publish New Post-Apocalyptic FPS, Metro 2033

THQ on Thursday announced it picked up pubilshing duties for an FPS from Ukrainian studio 4A Games called Metro 2033, a post-apocalyptic game based on the science-fiction novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Due on PC and Xbox 360 in 2010, Metro 2033 is set in the subways of post-apocalyptic Moscow, 20 years after a catastrophic occurrence that drove populations underground. On the surface "mutant horrors await," according to THQ's announcement.

Glukhovsky is a 30-year-old Russian journalist and novelist. His first novel was Metro 2033, which Glukhovsky originally released on his website for free in 2002. The work became a cult hit online before being published in hard copy in 2005. The physical version of the book has sold 450,000 units, and film rights are "currently in negotiation," the official statement said.

Metro 2033 has been in development for over two years, and runs on 4A's proprietary 4A Game Engine. The game emerged in 2006, although it only now found a publisher in THQ.

4A Games and THQ only announced an Xbox 360 and Nvidia Physx-enabled PC version of the game, although past reports and 4A Games' website list the PlayStation 3 as a target platform.

"Metro 2033 will plunge gamers into a terrifying vision of the future," said Richard Williams, VP of global brand management, THQ. "4A Games have worked closely with Dmitry Glukhovsky to deliver a unique game world, a compelling, cinematic story and an incredible, atmospheric experience to rival anything in the category."

Somebody tell this, but how many FPS's do we really need in the market? I ask because in the past 9 year have been nothing but a flood of FPS's in the market.

Well in the last 10 years how many good FPS have there been? That should be your question. Are you saying you haven't enjoyed Halo, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, COD, Battlefield, Bio-Shock? While I could do without the terrible America's Army and other such terrible games like that I don't see the problem with the so called "flood" of FPS in the market, because every genre has it share of bad games.

For me they are easily the most entertaining style of games. But how many are really coming out now? Good FPS are few and far between. Borderlands just came out an COD, Battlefield, and Bio-shock are coming out soon but then there is nothing for a long spell.

If more studious can produce the diversity that is between say Half-Life and Halo and keep them top notch like they are then there is nothing wrong with a large quantity of FPS. I say give 'em a chance until we actually see what they have produced, every studio has to start somewhere.

story driven FPS's can keep coming out forever as far as i'm concerned.

there doesnt seem to be that much left in the tank for multiplayer shooters though.

If shooters have any innovation left in them, multiplayer and cooperative is where it's at. Casual-Shooters (tm) :)

I'm less startled by the number of FPSes than I am about the recent number of post apocalyptic FPSes. Heck, post-apocalyptic in general. Is humanity in such bad shape that the only future we can think of is one where civilization is destroyed? I love me some Fallout, but there's gotta be more out there than a future of pure death and destruction...

Post Apocalyptic is popular because its easy to concept and its instantly familiar in both movies and games. Easy recipe;Just take the real world that we already know, make everything dirty and broken and sprinkle liberally with football and hockey equipment. Granted some franchises expand on the idea like Fallout's pseudo 50's future or experiment with art styles like Borderlands but the groundwork is pretty much laid out conceptually.

Personally I like the genre, Its like the wild west but with motorcycles and mutants/zombies. Bring on RAGE!

Leo, the only problem with that is I only care about single player games. :) And I think there's still a lot of room to improve and innovate. It depends on the publishers though, if they let the developers experiment and come up with new things, we'll see great things in the future.

To be on topic, I didn't know about this game before but from now on I'll keep an eye on it, Metro 2033 could be an awesome game.

Borderlands is not post apocalyptic. It's set on another Planet. If anything that's the opposite of post apocalyptic... humanity must have been doing pretty good to achieve space travel and exoplanet colonization.

PA is popular because it represents the current Zeistgeist of the times. And don't forget good ol' 2012 is around the corner. And the fact that the leading empire of the world has a war on two fronts and is planning a third.
