Japanese Sales Charts, Week Ending August 21st

With only one major new release this week in Japan sales have been down, but only by 26.4 percent, and still almost on par with the weekly average. Such a drop is usually expected at the end of the Bon national holiday though and overall sales of the top 100 titles (758,735 units) compares fairly well to last year’s figures of 798,210 and particularly the 505,180 units sold at the same time in 2003.

This solid performance is due to the continuing strong sales of titles such as Jump Super Stars (57,123 units sold this week), Winning Eleven 9 (55,827 units), DS Training for Adults (46,526) and Gentle Brain Exercises (37,862). The best selling game of the week though was anime license Naruto: Uzumaki Ninden with 96,054 unit sales.

In hardware sales the Nintendo DS still accounted for over half of all consoles sold with a 50.61 percent market share and 80,945 unit sales. The PlayStation 2 was next with a 20.82 percent share and 33,292 sales and the PSP at 14.96 percent and 23,923 sales. This was followed by the Game Boy Advance at a 10.97 percent market share, the GameCube at 2.48 percent and the Xbox at 0.16 percent.
