MMO publisher Sony Online has announced a deal with Tucson, AZ-based Octopi to acquire online strategy game Pox Nora, using key members of the Octopi team to set up a new Tucson-based online game development studio.

According to an official statement from SOE, the transaction closed on Friday, January 16th, and allows Sony Online to take full control of Pox Nora, which originally debuted in August 2006.

The online PC game, which mixes a collectible card game with turn-based strategy elements, is free for players at a basic level, but includes premium subscription and card/rune purchasing costs.

According to the official announcement: "As part of the acquisition, members of the Octopi development team will form the core of SOE’s new Tucson studio, focusing on the continuing support of Pox Nora as well as working with SOE’s Denver studio on new trading card and strategy game projects."

The deal supplements SOE Denver (formerly Worlds Apart Productions') focus on digital collectible card games, which include the Legends Of Norrath and Stargate Online CCGs.

“Our strategy and trading card games have been successful beyond our wildest dreams,” said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. “Expanding with a great product like Pox Nora and the outstanding development team from Octopi gives us a chance to extend our strategy game offerings and enhance the ones we already field.”
