Game engine provider Unity Technologies today announced the opening of a new office in Shanghai, as part of its expansion into Asian regions.

Unity has been aggressively expanding into China over the last year, with its Chinese userbase one of its fastest-growing at the moment. The opening of Unity Technologies China marks what the company says is the first in a string of strategic moves in the region.

This new office will be led by Allen Foo, who has previously worked for over a decade at Microsoft as director of business development in the Asia Pacific region. Unity now has offices in nine countries, including the U.S., England, Japan and Sweden.

As part of the announcement, Unity also revealed that it has signed a number of partnerships with Chinese companies, including a deal with digital delivery company China Cache, which will be providing Unity with 12,000 servers to satisfy demand for the Unity Web Player in China.

Unity said recently that the growth of its business in Asia is, in part, down to piracy, with revenue intake up 258.7 percent year-on-year.

The company's multi-platform Unity toolkit now has more than 1 million registered developers, with more than 250,000 registered users since the start of this year alone.
