Mojang and 4J Studios' recently-released Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has broken a digital sales record on the Xbox 360, as its day-one sales have outpaced those of every other game on Xbox Live Arcade.
Microsoft did not provide exact figures, but this news comes just weeks after RedLynx's arcade stunt racer Trials Evolutionbroke that same record by selling more than 100,000 copies within a day of its launch.
Even without publicly-available sales data, the game appears to have attracted an extremely large player base. The game released only yesterday, and its online leaderboards have accrued at least 459,000 unique player entries as of this writing.
Adding a bit of extra context, Minecraft creator and Mojang founder Markus 'Notch' Persson confirmed on Twitter that the Xbox 360 version of the game was "profitable in an hour."
This strong debut on consoles only builds upon Minecraft's runaway success on other platforms. Earlier this year, Mojang revealed that the mobile version of the game has passed 1 million sales, while the flagship PC version has sold more than 5 million copies.
A perfect example of lower priced games sell more copies in a bad economy. Congrats again Notch. I hope they realize this is the better path next gen. Lower the budgets and prices.
Congratulations on falling for Microsoft's market test. Now all your DRM Digital Download Games will be priced at $20. Thanks for paying, I mean, playing!
