This year, Damion Schubert contributed to our popular "Classic Postmortem" series by discussing the making of the seminal Meridian 59, often considered the first true 3D MMORPG.

Session Name: Classic Game Postmortem: Meridian 59

Speaker(s): Damion Schubert

Company Name(s): Bioware Austin

Track / Format: Design

Overview: When 3D MMORPGs seemed like little more than a twinkle in gamers' eyes, and when the only kind of massively multiplayer games most people knew about were text-based, Archetype Interactive Meridian 59's promise of "the first ever internet-based 3D MUD" seemed unreal. It set the stage for MMORPGs as we know them today, making way for EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and thousands of other titles. Meridian 59's lead designer Damion Schubert, now at BioWare working on key systems for Star Wars: the Old Republic, will share how he and his team created a game that would directly and indirectly inspire decades-worth of massively multiplayer online RPGs.

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent GDC events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers. Those who purchased All Access passes to events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Online already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription Beta via a GDC Vault inquiry form.

Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company. More information on this option is available via an online demonstration, and interested parties can send an email to Gillian Crowley. In addition, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault admins.

Be sure to keep an eye on GDC Vault for even more new content, as GDC organizers will also archive videos, audio, and slides from other events like GDC China and GDC 2013. Absolutely loved this video. Put perspective on the way games (especially MMOs) evolved over the last few decades.

"The Realm" (originally published by Sierra On-Line) was the first graphic MMO launched in March 1995 on PC, before the popular usage of the terms "massively multiplayer" and "MMORPG" while "Meridian 59" was the first 3D MMO released commercially on September 27, 1996.

Wow. I only remembered having played this game after the article reminded me of its existence. Nostalgia abounds.

Great presentation!

If you like PvP (and drama), Meridian59 is still the game to play. It's free to play so you have nothing to lose. There are plenty of veteran players willing to help out new comers. To join: http://www.meridian59.com; for a game guide and player forum: http://www.gilcon.net/meridian/
