Sony: No camera in the PS4 box, because players don't want it
Andrew House, CEO of Sony's games business, says "the vast majority of the audience that we speak to tells us that their primary wish is for the full controller interface."
Australian business site Business Spectator, House said that "there's not necessarily a huge emphasis being placed on camera interaction" by the core players that will be its early adopters.
This is an extension of what could be called the "gamers first" mentality Sony has adopted for the PlayStation 4, in which it has been emphasizing the console as a game machine first and a media device second, and one primarily pitched at a die-hard enthusiast audience.
Of course, price was also a primary motivating factor to leave the new PlayStation Eye camera out of the box. Doing so helped the console come in at $399, while Microsoft's Xbox One, which launches a week later in North America, slides in at $499 while including the latest version of its Kinect camera peripheral.
The PlayStation 4 is due to be released on November 15, 2013 in North America and November 29, 2013 in Europe, with other territories to follow.
