Epic executives Mark Rein and Paul Meegan have revealed via Twitter that the next game in the long-running Unreal Tournament franchise will debut next Thursday via a Twitch TV livestream.

The most recent prior installment of the franchise is Unreal Tournament III, which was released by Midway for the PC and PlayStation 3 in 2007, and Xbox 360 in 2008. It served a showcase for the company's Unreal Engine 3.

We can expect that the new title will assume much the same role for Unreal Engine 4, which was made available by monthly subscription in March and recently updated to better support Xbox One and PlayStation 4 development.

The new Unreal Tournament game will be the first major PC and console title the studio has unveiled since Chinese online giant Tencent acquired a significant stake in the company.

UE4 can be used to make UT in about 15 minuets, ie, the time it takes to compile.

UE4 comes with a 'shooter game' example, that is only lacking in gameplay refinement, it compiles and runs just fine.

I thought it was neato back in 2007 when the PS3 version of UT3 had mouse & keyboard gameplay support.
That was a nice touch on Epic's part.

I hope they repeat this inclusion in Unreal Tournament 4 on the next-gen consoles, although perhaps with a few more mouse/FoV options in the menu this time.

It's pretty straightforward to filter MP servers between controller users and keyboard & mouse users, the latter being in the minority. Although I could see a small hardcore movement forming around K&M servers if support started to trend from UT4 to other higher profile shooters on console.

I say, why not. There are some decent couch/recliner keyboard-mouse lap pads, or otherwise it's pretty easy to cozy up a PS4 on your PC desktop to use a monitor and your chosen gaming K&M.

But I'm not sure if 2014's Epic would go for it.

In 2007, UT3 also had the same map mods working cross-platform on both PC and PS3 -- a classy move on Epic's part. I'd like to see another PC/console partnership for UT4.

*Why not just play the PC version with K&M, possibly in greater detail? Some people may simply prefer a console's OS/social environment for the multiplayer experience in certain action titles, yet would enjoy the opportunity to play on K&M servers.

I gained alot of respect for Epic for including M&KB support in UT3 on ps3.
I'm not a big UT fan (was a Quaker) but the inclusion of M&KB support inspired me to buy the ps3 ver at launch.

I feel like they have a real opportunity to rake in some cash and goodwill here if they make it mod-friendly, make it run on older PCs and embrace the fast-paced style you can't do on a controller.

They probably won't though.

UE4, and the included 'shooter game' example, run fine on my 5 year old q9550 2.83ghz, gtx660, with full graph. UE4 eats about half my cpu, and no more. UT4 should run pretty well on most modern PCs.

Very skeptically optimistic of this. More skeptical than optimistic.

Anyway, if it's moddable, it's going do well. The Unreal Tournament community at this point will understand if the point of the game it to be tailored by the players instead of just wait for the developers to give them the vanilla game they want and turn their backs on it if it doesn't come ready.

Thinking about it a bit further, it might be a different form of engine showcase game, targeted at the small and indie developers. If the goal to to get people to mess with the engine while modding UT4 in order to get them hooked to pick it as their engine of choice once they decide to make they own games, then it makes to tal sense to make the game F2P and very raw at first so the community gets to do everything.

It'd kill three bunnies with a strike: a) make the game acceptable for the community by making it very raw and letting them do everything as they want; b) save money on the game's development, which allows the game to even exist, by having the modding scene build most of it; c) showcase the engine to the average small-developer guy, by getting them to actually making something with it, since the new pricing models are targetting that guy already.

Check out my UT2003/2004 mod, Elements of War! There's also some basic code for UT3/UDK I was working on, but never cared to finish. It's just a camera modification to make it into a sky camera view / top down view. Except my camera system rotates like a First Person Game... "Twin-Sticks 'TWISTED'" as I'm starting to call the camera system.

I've bought every UT game and every single time I haven't been able to play it until three/four years later on the next computer upgrade. I have an integrated card with a three/four inch computer, 200 watts... I don't even know what I can stick in there. I think this will be the first time I'm skipping a UT game. cya in five years UT4! :D

I'd wish they rather bring an Unreal singleplayer title.

The days for fast paced action FPS like Quake or UT are definitively over, unless you want to cater to the military shooter kids too.

Todays monetization won't help either. For show-off of a new engine, SP would be way better anyways. In fact, many maps in UT3 already suffered from too much post processing and distracting stuff that gets rather in the way.

UT3 died off pretty fast too.

Don't know why they chose to make another UT, but let's see what is really behind it.

There are a lot of us out there awaiting the return of a real arena fps. Military shooters do little to scratch this itch. I'm also interested to see how the Military crowd adopts or doesn't adopt the title. For those who play games like Call of Duty on Hardcore mode it might give them something harder to aim towards. For those just playing regular mode I imagine the idea of a faster and more frantic style of gameplay with less life is not attractive.

I doubt it will fit into todays world of constant rewards for nothing, instead of letting your playstyle reward you. That is the issue here too, among the factor that this is - unlike CoD - impossible on consoles unless you dumb it down as Epic already did with the PS3 version of UT3, which was way slower as the PC version.

F2P means that there must be some constant progression stuff. So does competition on the market with standard retail products. Otherwise, it will most probably be a lost cause that will die off fast... there is barely any way to create a game today that is the same as it has been 1999-2004. It is too little for most people today. Scoreboard at the end and audio cues are not enough anymore, thanks to Call of Duty mainly.

I don't want that. I want original Unreal Tournament if any, and I am not seeing that happen ever again.

I think it's a bit too early to make sweeping generalizations about what will or will not happen with a potentially new UT game. I have to admit, I am a little suspicious about the tencent investment and what that means for a new UT.

I also don't really understand your rant about F2P games. F2P means that the developers have to provide constant content for consumption. That doesn't necessarily mean there will be constant progression. There are plenty that only offer only aesthetic items, or alternate ways of interacting with the game.

I also disagree that having progression it is necessary to compete with standard retail products. Look at Quake Live. Look at Counter Strike:GO. Those are competitive games that do well for themselves and limit progression to your matchmaking rank. You are also totally disregarding mod support and mutators that added so much longevity to UT2k4 that could make a more meaningful resurgence than UT3. You also assume that Epic won't have a 'classic' mode for the die hard UT fan.

Also, Call of Duty hardly started the progression trend in multiplier shooters. Battlefield 2 preceded Cod4: MW by 2 years, and I'm sure there are older examples of lesser known titles before that.

I am just very sceptical as well as pessimistic that this is the right idea.

Neither Quake Live nor CS:Go are anywhere near "comparable" to what a new Unreal Tournament would be however. Quake Live IS Quake 3 Arena. FFA, not F2P. CS:Go is not an arena shooter and CS has always dominated the online world of PC games. Not to speak of Valves overal strategy when it comes to their games. Entirely different story really.

Epics last game success was a console 3rd person shooter. They may not be everyone, but they haven't really released much lately and especially nothing successful in the terms of what once made them what they are today.

Oh and I didnt "rant" (at all) against F2P, I simply don't want UT to be one.
