While Linux is gathering speed when it comes to game development support, Windows is still the lead platform for PC games. Leadwerks is looking to shift more devs over to Linux, with the launch of its game engine tools on Ubuntu.

Leadwerks ran a successful Kickstarter campaign last summer to put solid 3D game development tools on Linux, with the aim to allow developers to build their games within the Linux operating system.

The company today announced that its engine tools have launched on the Ubuntu Software Center -- and Leadwerks now plans to focus on Ubunty as its primary supported platform, even over its Windows engine.

Leadwerks CEO Josh Klint noted that there are plenty of exciting advances right now when it comes to Linux and video games, not least Valve's recently announced SteamOS and the barrage of Linux-based Steam Machines that are due to launch in the coming years.

More information can be found on the Leadwerks website.

When will the world realize Ubuntu != Linux? I gave my $100 to Leadwerks but now I don't get a "Linux" version to use. (Yes, I'm cranky)

It's ok. It's in your nature as a Linux developer to be cranky about things.

You are right, Ubuntu != Linux. However, Ubuntu is a version of Linux and one of the most popular consumer friendly versions of Linux. It has a massive support based that is readily available. All this makes it an attractive target platform for those looking to target Linux.

you guys should listen to Joe...

i'm a long term Leadwerks licensee and believe me, in a few months you'll all regret not paying close attention to what he is saying...

i've seen promises made, and promises broken... not that long ago joshua klint was touting the praises of mobiles and macintosh... promising versions for win/osx/android/iOS and Linux versions of Leadwerks...

just recently all mobile versions have been shelved... OSX versions have been shelved...

the guy is a great spin meister... you should be leery of him whenever his lips are moving...

visit the forums and learn first hand what real developers are saying before you put that happy face on here...
