Veteran 3D game artist Luis Antonio believes it's important to think about your art direction only after you nail down the core mechanics and goal of your game. Doing so allows you to zero in on exactly what you need to show the player to best accentuate the experience of playing your game.
As part of a behind-the-scenes look at his role in the art creation process for Jonathan Blow's upcoming puzzle game The Witness
, Antonio spoke at GDC 2014 about how important it is for developers to pare down the "noise" in their games and develop art styles that are clear, readable and subservient to the player experience.
