With over 4M sold, Witcher 3 handily recoups estimated $67M budget

June 10, 2015 | By Alex Wawro

CD Projekt Red co-founder Martin Iwinski published an open letter this week thanking the studio's fans and noting that the company sold over 4 million copies of The Witcher 3 worldwide in the two weeks following its May 19th release.

That's nothing to sneeze at, but what makes the figure particularly interesting from a game developer's perspective is how much The Witcher 3 cost to produce: an estimated 120 million Polish zloty, or roughly $32 million USD, according to a story published by Polish outlet Gazeta.pl and brought to our attention by NeoGaf.

The same article (which features comments from CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kicinski) pegs the game's marketing budget at roughly $35 million USD, suggesting that CDPR has already handily recouped the estimated $67 million it cost to produce The Witcher 3. Gamasutra has reached out to the company to confirm these numbers.

In a separate interview with Reuters, Kicinski said the company had been hoping for high sales of the game based on how many people pre-ordered it ahead of release (1.5 million) and noted that the profits will be turned towards further development on DLC for the game and new projects, including the studio's upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.

Update: CD Projekt Red has since revealed just how much it spent developing and promoting The Witcher 3, with company CEO Adam Kicinski explaining that the game actually cost 306 million polish zlotys ($81 million USD) to produce.
