Ouya buyout confirmed, as CEO leaves company

July 27, 2015 | By Kris Graft

Android-based game platform Ouya has been acquired by video game hardware company Razer.

The acquisition comes after months of rumors of an Ouya buyout. Unconfirmed reports of an Ouya-Razer deal emerged last month, not long after China’s Alibaba announced a $10 million investment into Ouya.

Tech blog TechCrunch has more details about the all-cash deal, which was confirmed by both Razer and Ouya. An amount was not disclosed but the report says the agreement was for Razer to acquire Ouya’s software assets, and for Razer to take on Ouya’s tech and dev relations teams, which will support Razer’s move into the Android TV games space.

The Ouya brand will also reportedly live on as publishing label under Razer.

The all-cash nature of the deal indicates that Ouya’s VC investors have cashed out, TechCrunch says. Ouya was also funded by Kickstarter backers in an explosive $8.5 million crowdfunding campaign in 2012.

Julie Uhrman, CEO and founder of Ouya, doesn’t appear to be part of the buyout deal. On Monday morning she tweeted, “Ouya was a once in a lifetime experience. Now, I'm off to find the next...stay tuned!”

She also said in a tweet to Razer’s official Twitter account, “Can't wait to see what you do. Take care of my incredible team and community...I know you will.”
