I'm not arguing with the list or the rankings, but I would like to see a list of the top 5 game companies to work for, broken out by publisher and developer. I'm sure the list would be very different. With so many out of work, it would be handy to have.
I talk all about this game dev stuff in my blog... http://aboutmakinggames.blogspot.com/ Mac |

Unity rocks! :D I love them, they are really friendly to developers. I once posted a question on their forums, and I think it was their CTO who answered my question. They really deserve to be on that list. And giving away their amazing engine for free is really a smart move.

I think the inclusion of Apple on this list is a real joke. One right doesnt make up for many wrongs. Sure the Appstore might provide another location for people to hawk their wares, but it has its own bag of dirty laundry and issues longer than anyone's arm and really has yet to proove anything but providing a positive marketing point to foolish investors or guys looking for a "feature point" for their company profile. OSX is still a painful platform to develop for and requires a lot of babysitting for full time OSX game support. Their OpenGL layer in OSX is mess to work with, causing gamedev's countless delays and hours upon hours of frustration. But most importantly of all, Apple hasn't prooven that they are here to support the games sector in the long haul, if anything this appears to be another cycle in their "Love/Hate" relationship with the gamedev sector that many of us have seen far too often to have the hot air that they blow smell sweet anymore. So far its just smoke and mirrors to help sell iPods to a cheap crowd of whining users who bitch and bemoan spending $2 to buy an app for a $200+ device. Sorry Apple, no twinkie for you!

L,
This list pertains to 2009. Apple is free to fail to make the list in succeeding years. |

As a consumer, I love Steam. I rarely buy games not on Steam anymore. They're available from any computer I sign into, they're in a centralized place, there are constant sales, and I'm constantly finding out about games that get little press. Even as a member of the gaming media I find that to be the case, particularly considering how marginalized PC coverage is by most gaming press.

I'm liking this list, for sure, great choices. I'm also inclined to give a clink of a champagne glass to Rocksteady Games for Batman: Arkham Asylum. It was their first title, a huge endeavor, major budget, huge franchise, and it can be viewed as one of the highest-risk investments anybody could ever make. To start off a brand spankin' new company with such a prestigious objective as Arkham Asylum amounts to bravery bordering on lunacy.
And my goodness, give Rocksteady an ovation here, they really slammed it out of the park. It was a commercial success, critical success, and most importantly, DC geek success. Solid new innovative combat system, brilliant story, awesome character designs, Arkham Asylum looks like a title from a team of people who have been working together for decades. |

I would like to see a survey of everyone who has tried to make an app for the iStore on their experience with the process.
because lets not forget, all these companies are being recognized for making it easier for people, especially n00bs, to go from idea to profit. I agree that Apple has been the most SUCCESSFUL, as in it has the most users and has made the most money, but as far as the above goes? I'm not so sure, I'm sure the process should be ALOT better. I really don't like the "MONEY > ethics, morality, general niceness, everything else" mentality of the selection of Apple. |

Achievements iPhone and Facebook, are long-term perspective for the gaming industry badly, we will see is only because of the global decline in all the games will turn a bit more money and a bit less about quality.
We really need another big bust gaming industry. Lots of small games and a lot of stupid big stupid games awarded nonviable juggernaut like Evil Arts and Take2 for people with IQ 90th. I think they are demonstrated to Gamasutra really is not an international, rather than American, because outside the U.S. market is no iPhone, but At the end of the world worth doing games just for riches. |
