Microsoft Pursues More Lifelike Avatars

Microsoft is looking into Xbox Live avatars that look more like their users and reflect their health condition, according to a new patent for "Avatar Individualized by Physical Characteristics".

The patent, discovered by consumer site 1UP, describes: "an Avatar generator for a virtual environment reflects a physiological characteristic of the user, injecting a degree of reality into the capabilities or appearance."

It adds, "Thereby, many of the incentives of the real world are replicated in a virtual environment." "Incentives" apparently refer to exercise, in a system where physical health and fitness can be linked to gaming rewards.

The patent also makes note of the "artificiality" of traditional avatars, describing them as a barrier to natural socialization because they provide users with only the simplest information about one another.

It's unclear how the avatars would reflect their users' health, appearance and mood in a more lifelike way, but references some kind of physiological sensor, according to the report.

Can't figure out you're unhealthy from the mirror or doctor? Are you unmotivated or unwilling to exercise? Then try the new and approved Xbox 360 Avatar.

This is probably just another 'useful' use of Natal...

Surprised this isnt already patented by Nintendo.

Uhhhhh, before the fat, balding avatar choice can we change the colour of our shirts? Or maybe have 12% of the editing ability of Rock Band's character creator? I know this leads to copyright implications but it also leads to creativity, something that would allow gamers to individualize themselves.

Some regions don't have the majority of their population plagued by obesity fueled by fast food and lack of exercise. But all regions have creative people who would like their avatar to look a least a bit unique. Can't imagine people wanting a Natal so their xbox360 can call them fat.

It took some time but I made a pretty convincing Darth Maul avatar for free, just playing around with the limited choices available.

Going off of what Adam said, I wouldn't be surprised if a major goal behind this is to make NATAL games play more smoothly. An avatar that has some proportional resemblance to the player could much more closely match his movements and probably create a much more natural gameplay experience.

Not surprised NATAL keeps coming up here. I also wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft wanted to charge 100 Points every time the user makes changes to the Avatar or updates it to keep it current.
