FFXIII Doubles Japanese MGS4 Sales In One Week

In perhaps unsurprising news, Japanese chart trackers are reporting that Square Enix's newly-released Final Fantasy XIII is a big hit in Japan -- with latest sales figures even more impressive.

The latest in Square Enix's epic role-playing game series sold 1.5 million units from its release in Japan on December 17 through December 20, according to a translation of a Famitsu report on Japanese-focused gaming weblog Andria Sang. The figure includes games bundled with special Final Fantasy XIII PS3 hardware.

That's more than twice the sales of the previous Japanese PS3 all-time software sales record holder, Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4, which has sold 706,000 units to date, according to Business Week, which cited figures from tracking firm Enterbrain, Famitsu's parent. The best-selling Wii game in Japan this year was Nintendo's June release Wii Sports Resort, which has sold 1.4 million units.

Just recently, Square Enix reported Final Fantasy XIII sales of 1 million units, but that figure did not include sales of the bundle, which pairs the game up with a PS3 that sports a Final Fantasy XIII theme.

The release of Final Fantasy XIII also drove a sharp increase in PS3 hardware sales in Japan, as the console reportedly sold a massive 245,406 units during the week, by far besting the previous record of 150,000 units, which followed the console's price cut and "slim" revamp earlier this year. The console has sold over 4 million units in the country.

Final Fantasy XIII is a PlayStation 3 exclusive in Japan, although Square Enix is also developing an Xbox 360 version for Western audiences. The Final Fantasy series has sold over 92 million copies worldwide since its 1987 debut.

Awesome sales for Square-Enix and Sony. That makes the second largest hit opening for Square this year. Also, this is easily the biggest PS3 week ever... Good job!

I'm really, really curious as to where Wii landed in comparison to the PS3. It only needs to sell ~110k units to keep ahead - it should've sold way more than that though.

I heard a rumor that NSMBWii actually increased from Week 2 to Week 3.

I'd really like to see Konami once again develop its own games and at least partially ditch the Publisher moniker. It was the games it developed on its own which made it such a powerhouse in the mid 90's. I'm glad to see Squeenix still devs Final Fantasy.

Huge week for the PS3. The Wii has only had 2 weeks that were bigger than the PS3's sales this week, since the Wii was launched, and one of them was the Wii's launch week.
Since the PS2 has launched, here is the number of home console weeks above 200,000:

2006-11-27 Wii 371,936 (launch week for the Wii)
2007-12-17 Wii 263,718
2007-12-31 Wii 242,802
(2006-12-18, 2006-12-25 Wii 203,079 -- combined week)

2000-02-28 PS2 630,552 (launch week)
(2001-12-24, 2001-12-31 PS2 281,818 -- combined week)
(2003-12-22, 2003-12-29 PS2 201,090 -- combined week)

Before this, there have been only 7 weeks (inlcuding combined weeks) when any home console has ever sold above 200,000, in the past decade.
This is the PS3's best ever week by a huge margin, and it's the fourth best overall home console hardware sales week in the last decade. Or if you exclude the combined weeks and launch weeks, the second best home consoles hardware sales ever.

Just a question, why do you use your account on this website to constantly flame one particular hardware manufacturer? This is a industry website, this isn't a fanboy site and I find your permanent fanboy boring at best, in fact I am annoyed by it after 2 months.

"why do you use your account on this website to constantly flame one particular hardware manufacturer?"

And which hardware manufacturer would that be?
I post on all 3 console makers.

" This is a industry website, "

Microsoft and Sony are not part of the games industry?

"this isn't a fanboy site "

Since you are one of the biggest Nintendo fanatics and fanboys on this site, you might consider taking your own advise, no?

"and I find your permanent fanboy boring at best,"

Good.
I find you obnoxious, ignorant and stupid at best.

" in fact I am annoyed by it after 2 months."

If I said I am annoyed at you, I'd be lying.
To be annoyed at someone, you've got to consider what they say of some importance.
I don't consider anythng you have to say of any consequence.

Anymore rubbish you have to spew out?

As long as Kevin's numbers are accurate, I do find it interesting.
It's always good to see things from a different perspective; the second highest sales week excluding launch weeks is an intriguing statement, again assuming the figures are correct.

I agree, but most of the time he makes up his numbers out of nothing, has no sources and is mixing them up in a, well let's say creative, way.

I agree with Christian, however. Being a witness of past posts, I somewhat feel some hostility.

:" agree, but most of the time he makes up his numbers out of nothing,"

No why don't YOU show me examples of that, boy?

"has no sources and is mixing them up in a, well let's say creative, way. "

Chortle!
This is coming from the same guy that swore that MW2 UK sales would collapse after the first week ?
Since then MW2 has been at # 1 in the UK all formarts charts for SIX straight weeks!

Look, I know you are still smarting from the clobbering you took from me over your MW2 versus NSMB(Wii) predictions, but that doesn't mean you have to make things up and lie every day does it?

" I agree with Christian, however. "

Christian Keichel is a clueless idiot, and a Nintendo zombie to boot.

"Being a witness of past posts, I somewhat feel some hostility"

You can feel all the hostility you want, if you launch ad-hominem attacks against me, you'll get clobbered right back. It's not a fight you are going to enjoy.

Garaph.info is your friend.
They have a database of past Famitsu and most Media Create weekly sales figures.
All you gotta do is run a SQL query to get any figures you want for any console you want right here:
http://garaph.info/linecompare.html

You can also get software sales by software groups on the same site here:
http://garaph.info/softwaregroupid.php

For Japan software sales figures, you can get all the figures you want(1st week sales, LTD sales etc by game and platform) for each platform from Japan Game Charts right here:
http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/

Top selling 360 games ever:
http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/360.php

Top selling PS3 gales since launch:
http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/ps3.php

Top selling Wii games:
http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/wii.php

The only thing is, their charts are Famitsu figures(not Media Create), and their database may be a couple of weeks behind the latest weekly figures(they tell you what their latest update date is, at the top of the page). However that doesn't matter much when you are looking for historical all-time sales figures.

It's pretty easy to check any figures I post on here on historical games/console sales.

What about you completely made up numbers of MW2 in Japan here?

PS3_Breaks_Top_10.php

At least I don't call other people "idiot". I am not the Nintendo Zombie, it is you, who seems to have some anger against one particular japanese games publisher and you are continuing post after post after post to flame this publisher.
All your talk about clobbering, crushing, destroying, that's the vocabulary Fanboys use, when they talk about the videogames/comics/movies/musicians they love and try to defend them against the idols of other Fanboys. If you use the vocabulary of a Fanboy and if you act as a Fanboy, then don't be surprised if people call you a Fanboy.

On the other side, it's up to you to show me, where I argued as a Nintendo Zombie.

That's all you got?
After all the numerous figures I have posted on this site?
And for that you claim that "but most of the time he makes up his numbers out of nothing"?
You gotta be kidding me.

Those Famitsu first week MW2 sales figures from the early Famitsu leaks which come out every week and are posted on Neogaf, before the official Famitsu figures are published on the Famitsu site:
The early Famitsu figures for Dec. 7 to 13 were:

01. [WII] New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo) - 464.824 / 1.401.558
02. [WII] Tales of Graces (Bandai Namco Games) - 143.000 / NEW
03. [PS3] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Square Enix) - 117.000 / NEW
04. [NDS] Tomodachi Collection (Nintendo) - 97.000 / 1.877.000
05. [PSP] Naruto: Shippuuden Narutimate Accelerator 3 (Bandai Namco Games) - 71.000 / NEW
06. [WII] Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo) - 66.000 / 1.060.000
07. [NDS] Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver (Nintendo) -
08. [PSP] Phantasy Star Portable 2 (Sega) - 63.000 / 348.000
09. [360] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Square Enix) - 61.000 / NEW
10. [WII] PokePark Wii: Pikachu no Daibouken (Nintendo) - 55.000 / 112.000

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=381910&page=21

How do I know they are right?
Because Famitsu figures are posted on Neogaf every week (they have been posting them for years), before the official Famitsu figures appear on the Famitsu site, and apart from some minor differences (give or take a few hundreds/thousands), they always turn out to be right. Easy enough to check when Famitsu post their figures on their site on Thursday(that is only tomorrow) isn't it?
We'll see who is right won't we?

"At least I don't call other people "idiot".

You launched ad-hominem attacks in your post, and I hit you right back.
Look, it's ok if you are not happy with your life, but that's hardly my fault is it?

"it is you, who seems to have some anger against one particular japanese games publisher and you are continuing post after post after post to flame this publisher."

Yeah?
My post on this thread was about this week's PS3 sales, as compared to the top weekly sales ever of any home console since the PS2 was launched.
I compared the PS3 sales to both the best PS2 weeks and the best Wii weeks, so which publisher am I supposed to be attacking here?
You can be as paranoid and schizophrenic as you want, but just keep it at home will ya?

Kevin Jones

@ Christian Keichel,

Here ya go.
The MW2(PS3/360) figures from last week from Famitsu's own site, plus the rest of the Famitsu top 30.

You can use any web translation software you want from Japanese to English.
