5th Cell's Scribblenauts Sells In 1 Million Units Worldwide

The 5th Cell-developed Nintendo DS game Scribblenauts has shipped over 1 million units to retail worldwide since its launch in September 2009, according to publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

The side-scroller, named after the hand-drawn art style and gameplay that involves writing words on the DS touch screen to conjure objects to solve puzzles, has also been recognized by many critics for its innovative, emergent gameplay.

"We are extremely pleased with the sales of Scribblenauts and credit the game’s innovation and wide appeal in making it a hit with gamers of all skill levels," said Martin Tremblay, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

The independent Bellevue, WA-based 5th Cell is also behind the DS games Lock's Quest and Drawn to Life, and is currently working on a new game for a non-handheld platform.

Scribblenauts was recently recognized by the Game Developers Choice Awards as a nominee for the Innovation award, to be given out at GDC next month, and also received a similar nomination for this month's AIAS Awards.

Scribblenauts, released in North America in September last year, also made the top 20 U.S. retail game sales list in its opening month, selling an initial 194,000 units.

If it only moved 200k in its first month, and is already up to a million, the average monthly sales must be pretty ridiculous. I look forward to what they can do in the follow-up.

This will be an evergreen seller. A nice feather in the cap for 5th Cell regardless.

Add the 3 million from Drawn to Life, and 5th Cell should have gotten enough money for a couple more DS games. Lock's Quest is really good, and wouldn't mind a sequel.
