Dragon Age: Origins Sells In 3.2 Million Units

BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins has shipped more than 3.2 million units worldwide since its Fall 2009 release, publisher Electronic Arts announced today.

"This is a tremendous start for the Dragon Age franchise and we are extremely pleased with the great reception the game has already received from critics and fans worldwide," says BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka -- who also now holds the title of group general manager of Electronic Arts' RPG/MMO Group.

The studio's still working on building on the title's success, with the first expansion pack, Dragon Age Origins: - Awakening, slated to launch on March 16, 2010.

Set following the events of Dragon Age: Origins, players are tasked with rebuilding the order of Gray Wardens and investigating the survival of the darkspawn after the death of the Archdemon. The studio promises "intriguing moral choices", and players will either be able to import their Dragon Age: Origins character or begin as a new Grey Warden from Orlais.

"Our team is dedicated to crafting high quality, engaging new adventures and stories in the world of Ferelden for our fans," says Muzyka.

EA yesterday confirmed a full sequel to Dragon Age was slated for early 2011.

It's awesome to hear how well the game is doing. I thought it was a bit too niche and too complicated to find a larger audience, but it looks like it has. It makes me glad to see what is essentially an old-fashioned RPG based on story-telling and character building sell so many copies.

Shipped and sold are two different things.

I hope they start mixing in new genre styles as they did in Mass Effect 2. Maybe not mixing FPS elements as in ME, but I hope they continue with that strategy with different kind of genres. I was starting to become concerned with BioWare, thinking they were a one-trick pony. Mass Effect 2 was a pleasant surprise, and I hope they continue to push their genre forward.

Yeah justin, I too hope that Bioware stops making those lame RPGs and starts making action games instead. That'd be way better. There are way too many people making single player RPGs these days, and the staggering glut of them should be eliminated. The more FPS/TPS titles we get on the market the more diverse it will be.

uh huh

" Shipped and sold are two different things "

/sarc Yeah, like they sold only 500,000 but yet shipped a massive 3.2 million units to retailers during a recession when retailers have already sharply cut down on the stock they take from games publishers. That would make a lot of sense wouldn't it?

You gotta be kidding.
Dragon Age is an excellent RPG.
As for Bioware, they are on a roll. The just relased Mass Effect 2 is not only one of the best RPG's ever made, it's one of the best games ever made. Period.

Lol, Kevin, he was being facetious. Dragon Age is exceptional, and while I understand that some lament ME2's diminished RPG elements, I find the game enthralling.

More ME, more Dragon Age, more Bioware, please!
