Devs, this is the year you can register your own .games domain

Devs, this is the year you can register your own .games domain

Heads up, devs: Domain name service provider Rightside aims to start selling .games domains later this year alongside its extant portfolio of top-level domains like .lawyer, .republican and .rip.

This seems chiefly notable for developers and studios whose names rhyme with "games," but the fact that Rightside is targeting its .games business squarely at the game industry presages a future where many major game releases will be accompanied by an appropriate .games vanity website.

It also highlights how game industry revenues are attracting the eye of businesses (like Rightside) with broader interests.

"The software games industry alone is forecasted to grow from $90 billion a year in 2016 to $115 billion a year by 2020 and that doesn't even include the hardware and hobby game market," Rightside CEO Taryn Naidu stated in a press release. "Our acquisition of .games is an exciting opportunity for game brands of all sizes."

If you're interested in getting your own .games, know that Rightside aims to launch the domain in the third quarter of 2016 with a (starting) wholesale price of $12.
