EA Sports said Tuesday that it partnered with pro gaming organization Major League Gaming to integrate online tournament functionality into upcoming EA Sports games this year.
EA and MLG said that new online game lobbies in certain EA Sports games will direct gamers to MLG-sanctioned and refereed tournaments. The companies explained, "Wins, losses, and other relevant statistics will be tracked automatically and compiled in a personalized online competition profile, enabling the definitive ranking system for sports gamers in North America."
The companies said in a statement that they intend to "bring to market the most fully integrated competitive experience in online console gaming."
EA and MLG already have a working relationship as partners on EA Sports' Challenge Series of live North American gaming tournaments.
"Online competition and knowing where you stand is what video gaming is all about," argued Matthew Bromberg, president and CEO of MLG, who added that the partnership will contribute to the social aspect of competitive gaming.
EA and MLG also hope that the new partnership will afford more marketing opportunities for companies looking for online and live tournament exposure. PlayStation, Best Buy, Ball Park, and Geico have all sponsored EA Sports' Challenge Series.
"We've been proud to work with MLG to help usher in a new era of video game competition," said EA Sports president Peter Moore. "Today's announcement reflects the natural evolution of the EA Sports experience..."

Now, will MLG make pressure on game devs to remove auto-aim for console games or at least make sure the players can completely disable it Online or in LAN? Afterall, MLG is supposed to regroup the best console players. I wouldn't expect a pro player to use any sort of auto-aim. Maybe all multiplayer games should also offer dedicated servers for Online or LAN purposes.
