Rockstar Games says it's spending more money than ever from its pre-launch TV budget to push its upcoming Red Dead Redemption, which it calls "our most ambitious game to date and our biggest UK release this year."
Rockstar GM Neil Stephen tells UK trade site MCV that the company is aiming for GTA-level top billing for the Western action franchise, which it hopes to make a "massive triple-A title."
As part of the push, the company will run its very first cinema ad campaign, as the game's "cinematic nature... makes it a perfect fit" for the big screen.
"We will be executing a nationwide ad campaign targeting the audiences of Robin Hood, Iron Man 2 and Prince of Persia," Stephen says.
According to the report, the ads that run alongside the films will receive support from cinema posters that offer consumers the opportunity to download game content via Bluetooth.
"In terms of sales projections, we are aiming high and as such are focusing more attention on retail channels than ever before," Stephen adds.
After what my friends told me about this game at PAX, they won't need much advertising. This will be a day 1 buy for me, and I'm basing it off the majority of what my friends said. Yes I take their opinions seriously with regard to gaming.
I love the western genre, so I am really looking forward to this.
It will do well, but I think it's upside is limited by it being set in the wild west. I don't think that resonates with the mainstream as well as stuff like space marines, criminals, soldiers etc.
Pretty obvious that they want this thing to do GTA numbers, and I don't think it's possible. They might have been better served by attempting to market it as, "from the makers of GTA....GTA in the wild west!!!"
Day 1 buy for me as well. Red Dead Revolver was a personal favorite. The first game offered a lot of replay value and very enjoyable characters/storyline. Gun for the PS2 was also a lot of fun. There have been relatively few western style games in past years, it sounds like a refreshing change to me.

Whatever happened with the "Wives of Rockstar San Diego"?
Add some housing and farming, and mining and yer set.
